Guise

In the late 1970s, New Ash Green had a high fashion menswear shop called Guise in the unit that is now The Bookshop.

Mitzi Worsfold moved into New Ash Green in 1972 and continued working in London’s West End until she was asked to manage Spellbound in New Ash Green. Spellbound was a ladies designer dress shop owned by Nadia Sclare and Janet Weitzman. Its round window is still there in front of what was recently a Travel Agent.

Mitzi managed Spellbound for four years from 1974 to 1978. The unit next door but one to Spellbound was a record shop (now the bookshop), which Mitzi bought in 1978 with Tony Haskett and re-opened as Guise.

Guise sold high fashion menswear that was usually only obtainable in London. There was also a 'GUISE' tee-shirt. The shop was very modern looking being dimly lit with a copy of Playboy magazine on a black and chrome table. Mitzi had a West End window-dresser come down regularly to do the Guise window displays.

Mitzi had a young Saturday girl called Jane to help her in the shop and they have remained friends ever since. Jane’s Dad and his partner Roni bought the Deli from Annette and Hilary. Jane went on to own the handmade chocolate shop in the concourse of the first floor shopping area – Upper Street North.

Mitzi and Tony sold Guise in 1979 to Richard and Sue Fitt who added sportswear to the menswear collections.

Mitzi gave birth to her daughter Chloe shortly after selling Guise and later had a son Josh. Mitzi has had three houses in New Ash Green. She now lives in Culverstone with her third husband Tommy Cramer.
